Momma Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys
BY RON BARR
Here’s how the last roundup came down for the Dallas Cowboys. Minnesota had stomped and shredded Dallas to tune of 27 to 3 with two minutes to play. On 4th down and easily within field goal distance, instead of kicking a field goal or running the ball up the middle, Brett Favre found tight end Visanthe Shiancoe in the end zone for a touchdown making the score 34-3. There was 1:55 left on the clock. This is when the Cowboys became crybabies. Keith Brooking chased Favre to the sidelines and had a heated exchange with Vikings defense end Jared Allen. Brooking later called the play "classless." Vikings nose tackle Pat Williams responded, "It's the playoffs. It ain't no regular-season game. If you lose, you go home. We take no pity on them.”
There’s no debate the “extra” Vikings touchdown was unnecessary, but for Brooking and the Cowboys to be more than just a little irritated is uncalled for. We’re talking sports, competition, emotion and Brett Favre here. And, when you’re 40 years old and still playing the game as well as Favre is, he has the right to go for his 4th touchdown pass of the game whenever he wants. That’s called passion, not classless. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones manned up and said it best, "I don't know how you take the compete out of Brett Favre. They were playing the game, that's all." And, he also said, "We play 'em again next year, so we'll see how that goes." At least there’s one real Cowboy on his team.
