Big Time Trades
BY MAX BERMAN
Most basketball fans agree the biggest and most surprising NBA trade in the last five years is Pau Gasol moving from the Memphis Grizzles to the Los Angeles Lakers. And, although this year’s NBA deadline trades match the magnitude of that trade, I’d say Tracy McGrady moving to New York is the most interesting one. I don’t think it will do anything, but it makes some movement around the league. Only time will tell whether it was the right move for the Knicks, but it doesn’t appear McGrady is going to help the Knicks in the long run. It also poses the question: Is New York waving bye bye to Lebron? Maybe they made the deal because they don’t see Lebron leaving Cleveland. Also, bringing in McGrady takes up cap room which they’d need to sign him. But, whatever floats the Knicks boat is fine with me.
Another big time deal was Antwan Jamison moving to the Cavaliers. In his debut, he didn’t show up. He only had two points and went 0-12 from the field. But as a two-time all-star, I expect a lot from him as the second half of the season progresses. Another big deal was Caron Butler moving to Dallas. I don’t know how well it’ll workout for Dallas or Washington. Washington, having given up Jamison and Butler, seem pretty much done. And as for Dallas, I just don’t see Butler fitting in there. He’s a good player, but it’s going to be hard to fill Josh Howard’s shoes. Both are good, but with all the pressure, I just don’t see it.
Hey, that’s my take on the NBA deadline wheeling and dealing.
