The Playoffs

View from the Couch

By Screamin' Leeman

Oh, now sweet it is.   The mighty Yankees get knocked off their perch in the comfort of their billion-dollar ballpark in the Bronx.  Well, what do ya think about that?

The overblown, overpaid, overweight (in CC's case at least), self important Yank-wads get taken down a notch in front of their pouting, whining, disbelieving home town fans.

Although "taken down a notch" really is an oversimplification of what happened; they were eliminated!   Oh, happy day.

See ya later, boys!    We'll catch you next year at spring training...

The Detroit Tigers came into Yankee Stadium and beat them because they are a better team.  Not only that, they are hungrier.   Oh, it does my heart good to have confirmation once again that you can't BUY a championship, no matter how much money you have to throw around.

And those TV announcers!   My God, they were fawning over the Yankees so bad that I had to leave the room at least twice to puke.   Talking about 'This Yankee lineup is far too powerful to be held back... etc etc'   Basically dismissing the Tigers while they talked about the Yankee greatness. Unbelievable smarminess...

Gee, I wonder what they're talking about today?

Now, we have two more games, both game fives, do or die, with two more underdogs, fighting for their lives against what appear to be infinitely superior teams at home in their own ball parks.

Number one:  The Cards against the Phils, who appear to be the best team in baseball, period.  They unquestionably have the best pitching staff, and they'll be in the comfort of their own park, with their own Phillie fans.

But the Cardinals, who barely squeaked into the playoffs on the very last day, have been struggling and clawing and scratching just to make it this far, and here they are:  One game for all the marbles (well, most of the marbles anyway).   One game, winner goes on, loser goes home.   Does is get any better than this?   Wouldn't it be great to see the lowly Cards take the Phils down in their own ball park?   The underdog rising up to topple the supposedly invincible pitching staff of the Phils?   Could happen.   Should happen.  I'm hoping it Will happen.

Then, the Arizona D-backs playing the Milwaukee Brewers in Milwaukee.   Another underdog playing in the favored team's yard.   The D-Backs are kind of like the Giants of 2010 (who are still World Series Champions, by the way).    They came from nowhere.  No one gave them a chance.  As a matter of fact, they lost 97 games in 2010 and came in dead last.   From 'worst' to 'first.'  Kirk Gibson's first full year as a manager, seems like he's made quite a difference, no?     Wouldn't it be nice to see them beat the mighty Brew Crew?   Then, we'd have an entire playoff made up of underdogs.

And that's my idea of a really good time.
