Too Old to Pinch Hit?

Brody's Blog

Just when we thought Tony La Russa was out of wacky ideas, the Cardinals manager tops himself. I have no problem with La Russa wanting Mark McGwire as his hitting instructor, but now, La Russa is talking about activating the one time super sized Big Mac and using him as a pinch hitter. La Russa says, "If we're in contention, we'll put him on the roster Aug. 31. It's a nice little dream." The last time we saw McGwire, his dream of someday entering the Hall of Fame was all but laid to rest.

That was five years ago, when McGwire informed congress that he didn't want to live in the past, and refused to answer questions about whether he ever used performance-enchancing drugs. Players must wait five years after retiring for Hall of Fame consideration, and they get 15 years to remain on the Hall of Fame ballot. McGwire has already appeared on the ballot three times, so he's down to 12 more chances. However, if McGwire unretires, he would get an additional 5 year ''grace'' period to rebuild his image. Now that he's older, perhaps McGwire is wiser and will answer questions about his questionable past.

Also, now that he's older, perhaps McGwire has outgrown that nasty acne problem, which might tell us something about his physical state. Good luck Mark. But this time, when you attempt to build yourself back up, leave the androstenedione on the shelf.
