COLLEGE FOOTBALL '10 Reviewed by Rick Tittle, host of the Video Game Review This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

As the leaves turn from green to…well, other colors, we are happily faced with another season of gridiron action both on the field and on our tv screens.  Electronic Arts is the Cadillac of football video game creators, and they have not let us down with NCAA FOOTBALL ’10, now available on the PS2, PS3, XBOX 360, and the PSP.  With a different player on the cover of each format, EA fully realizes that the appeal of a title such as this lies in the multiple conferences and schools within.
Strategically placed one month prior to the annual release of MADDEN FOOTBALL, we can delve full-bore into the ranks of our favorite student/athletes.  But don’t be fooled – this game is not an afterthought or a mere hors d’oeuvre to the NFL game on the near horizon.  NCAA FOOTBALL 10 is a great game as a stand-alone title and brings a whole lot of unique aspects to the table.  Let’s face it: the mascots in college are way better than the mascots in the pros!

Gameplay is pretty much the same as last year’s incarnation, although the new feature called “family play” allows decent performances from folks not too acclimated to proper X’s and O’s.  The really cool new feature is the “Team Builder” mode which allows you to create a team from scratch and even use logos you make yourself on a pc.  You then import these settings into your console.  Did I mention you have to use a pc?  Yeah, it’s a pain, but no pain no gain.  Also, ESPN’s Erin Andrews comes to life in real-time video during the “Road to Glory” area of the game, which is exactly like the “Campus Legend” feature from the 09 version, except this year a lovely blonde siren is present.  Nice!
If you are an online gamer and want to prove your loyalty to your alma mater, there is a new idea called “Season Showdown.”  Within this you pick one team and every time you play with that team, you build up points and then can compare your totals to what others are doing around the world.  Do you really love Florida and is Tim Tebow your favorite player ever?  Then prove it by playing with the Gators in the Season Showdown.  24/7.  Naps are for sissies.

With any perennial sequel such as this one, the main question for me is always, “Is there enough different from the last one which makes it worth buying.”  The answer is yes.  I give it an 8.5 out of 10.
