Are You Ready For Some Football?

BY WILLIAM MORRISS

Isn’t it great to have the NFL back in action. To me, there are few things better on a Sunday afternoon than sitting down and watching your favorite team fight for 60 minutes. You get to see all your favorite players give everything they’ve got to win the game. Wait, you’re telling me I'm only going to see the starters play a quarter? And they won't even be running hard? And its still full price??? Oh that’s right. It’s the preseason.

Every year the NFL trots out four games of meaningless football called the pre-season. Its supposed to give teams a chance to evaluate players and let fans see their favorite teams. To me, it’s just a chance for players to get injured while playing for nothing and another opportunity for the NFL to take money out of true fans wallets. Does it really have to be four games? Aren't two games enough to know whether the Raiders are going to suck?  I’m no expert, but I’ve known that since the end of last year. Then there’re the injuries. Every year teams lose big name player after big name player while making a tackle or breaking a run in a game that doesn’t count. Football is a violent sport, we should know that. To make our best players go out there and fake effort for one quarter every game is silly. Not to mention boring. I’d almost rather watch the home design network than watch some third stringer miss tackles. Almost.

If the NFL wants to improve their pre-season system, they should take a cue from college football. Before every college season, sometime during summer practice, they hold a spring game. One game among themselves to see where all the players are developmentally. Not only would it cut down on the injury risk, but this game in addition to training camp would give teams plenty of time to evaluate players. Then we could get to some entertaining pro football earlier and not have to watch the Super Bowl in February. If not a spring game then at least cut the number of exhibition games from four to two. Because the last thing I need is two extra weeks of ESPN hyping their preseason Sunday night games as if it’s the Super Bowl.
