The Long Run
BY RON BARR
One early morning in 2005, New York firefighter Matthew Long's life was changed forever while on a routine bike ride in the city. When a bus made an illegal turn, Long was run over and dragged. He suffered critical damage to his pelvis and leg and, to make matters worse, he was impaled by his bike seat. Doctors gave him a 1% chance of survival.
After forty surgeries and months in the hospital, he did more than survive.
He persevered and trained to participate in a marathon and then the Lake Placid Ironman Competition. His story has since become a source of inspiration for people around the world.
